The land-based gambling sector is highly regulated. There is no other betting and gaming team in the UK that has represented all major bookmakers in licensing applications or has undertaken as much advocacy in contested casino applications before the Courts. We were, therefore, extremely pleased when Andrew and Paddy were referred to as, “arguably the two leading betting and gaming solicitors in the country” (Chambers Directory). Both have appeared in Magistrates’ Courts and Crown Courts, and before Licensing Committees, throughout the UK.
Paddy and Andrew have both secured their Higher Rights of Audience which enables our clients to give direct instructions, safe in the knowledge that there will be continuity of representation from instruction to court hearing. The team has been strengthened by the appointment of Anna Mathias – a 20 year experienced Barrister with significant experience in the sector. She is one of the most experienced lotteries sector regulatory lawyers in the market. She has been retained as advisor to the Lotteries Council and all of its members for many years, dealing with all manner of enquiries from charities and their commercial lottery partners. She has advised major charities such as Comic Relief, MacMillan, Cancer Research UK, Marie Curie, the Air Ambulance Society, the British Red Cross, Guide Dogs for the Blind, the PDSA and the Royal Air Force Association.
William Hill, Ladbrokes, Coral and Bet Fred have all been represented by the team. Woods Whur continues to be instructed in contested hearings which are brought before the Committee – including Coral and a range of independents – as well as acting for Jennings Racing – the largest independent bookmaker in the South East and Grosvenor Casinos.
The team have completed major casino projects for Thistle Hotels and Luminar/Lucien Barrier. The casino work involved the team personally representing clients in the Magistrates’ Courts and against QC opposition.
Andy has acted for the international operators of the new casino in the Park Lane Hilton from the grant of the operating licence through to the removal of the licence in to the Park Lane Hilton.
Individual operators are also clients of the firm as well as local community groups and schools wishing to organise raffles and small society lotteries. The team has received a large number of new instructions to deal with internet-based gaming, including ‘Skill with Prize’ competitions and ‘Low Bid Auction’ schemes.
