James Thompson is a Partner and our head of Regulatory specialising in particular in the defence of health & safety prosecutions.
He is 18 years qualified and has spent all of his career in the law dealing with health and safety, food safety, and other criminal prosecutions brought against organisations and their senior staff resulting out of regulatory failings where the criminal law is applicable.
He is a qualified solicitor advocate allowing him to practice in the Crown and Appeal Courts. In addition, he regularly appears conducting his own advocacy in the Magistrates’ and Coroner’s Courts.
James has represented clients in both the public and private sectors in the defence of serious criminal offences as well as prosecuted for local Government and central Government departments.
James has over 25 years experience in the police service in relation to the investigation of offences from initial investigation to submission of proceedings to the CPS & private prosecutors.
James is recognised as a experienced practitioner in this area and is highly rated and recommended by previous and current editions of Chambers & Partners and Legal 500.
In addition, James is a member of the Executive Committee for the Tyne & Wear branch of IOSH and a member of the Health and Safety Lawyers Association.

James has developed a number of training courses which are appropriate for private and public bodies and can offer proactive advice to clients to avoid or minimise the risk of prosecution, as well as reactive advice should regulators already be involved.
