Regulatory

Woods Whur’s regulatory team helps businesses and licensed premises navigate investigations, enforcement, and prosecutions with calm, expert support, protecting both reputation and operations when things go wrong.

REGULATORY CHALLENGES

Specialist support with investigations and prosecutions

The regulatory team handles investigations and prosecutions across sectors, acting for both organisations and individuals in matters ranging from road traffic and health and safety to food safety and environmental offences. The team regularly deals with enquiries and proceedings brought by bodies such as the Health and Safety Executive, Environment Agency, local authorities, the police, and specialist regulators.

Licensed premises often face regulatory issues around health and safety, food hygiene, labelling, fire safety, and weights and measures. Woods Whur advises on due diligence obligations to staff, customers, and the public, reviews policies and procedures, and defends operators facing improvement or prohibition.

The team has experience across a wide range of complex regulatory scenarios, including gas safety on construction projects, asbestos management for large employers, and fatal incident scrutiny involving the police, HSE, and coroners. They have also acted in significant environmental and food safety cases, reducing or defeating large-scale prosecutions and negotiating proportionate, evidence-based outcomes that allow clients to continue trading.

Woods Whur’s regulatory work includes consumer protection, discrimination, data protection, Gangmasters legislation, and road traffic offences where licences and livelihoods are at stake. The team also supports clients through inquests and coronial investigations following deaths in hospitality, healthcare, transport, and other sectors, managing all connected criminal, civil, employment, and regulatory proceedings from start to finish.

Alongside contentious work, the team provides tailored training for boards, managers, and frontline staff on key regulatory topics, including sector-specific guidance and emerging requirements such as those seen during the COVID‑19 regime. This focus on education and prevention helps clients strengthen compliance, reduce risk, and respond more effectively if incidents, inspections, or enforcement action arise in future.
